Waters of Life Council Meeting Minutes September 8, 2015

Members present: Linda Britton, Tim Martenson, Jim Bruning, Deb Skoglund, Sally Halvorson

1.  Meeting was called to order by President Linda Britton at 6:35 pm.

2.  Pastor Tim led with opening prayer.

3.  Approval of Minutes:  Motion was made by Sally Halvorson and seconded by Jim Bruning to approve the August minutes as presented. Motion carried.

4.  Treasurer's Report:  Deb Skoglund distributed and reviewed the financial report as of August 31, 2015.  Total Waters of Life (WOL) and Bubbling Brook Child Care Center (BBCC) year to date receipts are $333,506.18 and year to date expenses are $334,065.31 indicating an operating deficit of $559.13. This compares with a deficit of $28,108.72 a year ago. BBCC has been doing well this year and has been showing a monthly profit. Our expenses overall have been close to last year and slightly lower in some areas. Discussion was raised as to the significant contribution to our church operation of our secretary, Mary Peterson, and the importance of recognizing her financially with a raise. Following discussion, a motion was made by Deb Skoglund and seconded by Linda Britton to give Mary a 5% increase effective October 1st, 2015. Motion carried.  Sally Halvorson made a motion to approve the treasurer's report, seconded by Linda Britton. Motion carried.

5.  Other business:

Bubbling Brook:  Linda Bergstrand reported that a 5 year old school age child in the daycare had her finger caught in the women's bathroom door, resulting in the end of her finger being ripped off, which required medical care. After investigation, it was determined that our insurance does cover such incidents and is working with the family toward making a settlement.  Additionally, new carpet for the infant room has been purchased, a new changing table is here, the playground piece has arrived and been installed, and the pre-school room has plans for some purchases in the future. Danielle is working on obtaining a grant for purchasing a swing set. The proposed grant is for $3,000 which will cover the $2,020 cost of the swing set.

Facility Update:  Jim Bruning has talked with Lawrence Peterson from the Health Department to determine steps needed to be in compliance with regulations. The garbage dumpster needs to be a minimum of 50 feet from the well head and the vegetation needs to be removed from the top of the mound system.  Various options of placement of the dumpster were discussed. Additionally, building options for a three sided structure around the dumpster were presented by Jim. Linda Bergstrand will check with Danielle to determine if a gate is needed in front of the enclosure to be in compliance with daycare regulations. Pastor Tim made a motion to purchase a tan vinyl fence, to have F-Troop install it at their convenience, with a price not to exceed $600, to keep the location on the South side of the church and at a distance in compliance with health department regulations. Motion was seconded by Linda Britton. Motion carried.

Jim presented a sketch of a proposed church sign. The men of the Boundary Waters trip, looking to perform a church project, have agreed to take on the task of building this sign. The proposed sign will include features which coordinate with the look of the church, and include lighting. The group was directed by Council to continue the planning process and bring more information to the next Council meeting.

Jim relayed a request by Bev Morris to install a water softening system to preserve the kitchen dishes and other equipment. She has researched possibilities and has found a system without the need for salt, has no waste and uses no electricity. The cost of this water softening system was listed as $1,409.06. The Council directed Jim to invite Bev to come to the next Council meeting with more information on this system.

Linda Bergstrand mentioned that several doors in the building are not closing correctly including emergency doors which close so softly that they do not latch. Security alarms are sounded,  resulting in her being notified of security issues. The security company who services our church will be notified of this, with corrections of this problem requested.

Jim will post the list of facility projects that are currently being considered as well as projects that have been completed in a visible spot for the congregation to review. It is hoped that input will be received by congregation members as to interest in prioritizing future projects and eliciting help on them from congregation members.

Wild Game Feed:  Linda Britton reviewed the work completed to date on organizing the Wild Game Feed. Specific food lists will be created to direct food donations (last year had deficits of certain food items) and help will be sought for cooking. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, from 4-7:00 pm with the Silent Auction beginning at 7:30 pm. Lori Dowd has agreed to head the Silent Auction and Dezeray Pollard will again be in charge of the 4 Wheeler raffle.

6.  Pastor Tim and members closed with the Lord's Prayer.

7.  Meeting adjourned at 7:55 pm.

The next Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at 6:30 pm.
