Council Meeting Minutes

Council Meeting Minutes November 11, 2014

The church council meeting was called to order by President Eric Kaiser at 6:30 pm November 11, 2014.  Members present were Eric Kaiser, Pastor Tim, Deb Skoglund, Sally Halvorson, Justin Dahl, and Linda Britton.  Also present were Linda Bergstrand and Dene Halvorson.

Pastor Tim shared a thank you card he received from a family the church helped recently.  He informed the council that this gratitude shows how our church is working to serve our community.  Pastor Tim also thanks each council member for all they do for our church.

Motion by Justin Dahl, second by Deb Skoglund to approve minutes from the October council meeting.  Motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report

Deb Skoglund reported things are looking better with WOL being down by about $14,000 and BBC down $2900.  Deb informed members that some deposits were not made in the current month so November will be a good month from the Wild Game Feed.  Bubbling Brook had a $2,900 loss last month because the center had to close for two days due to water problems.     Deb Skoglund will work with Linda Bergstrand and the other advisors of the Center to include this when the budget is prepared for the council.     Motion by Justin Dahl, second by Eric Kaiser to approve the treasurer’s report as presented.   Motion carried.

Bubbling Brook Child Care Center

Linda Bergstrand reports Dawn Sather, a church member who is a CPA, will be assisting the Center in setting up a budget for 2015 and submitting it to the council.  Linda also reports she has found out about a $3,300 grant for playground equipment.  She has checked with a supplier and would be able to get a very good price on equipment with shipping in the spring.   To receive the grant money the equipment must be purchased during a specific time and once the Center spends the money and submits the information the grant money would be received.  Linda has been informed of a $10,000 interest free Angel Loan with a payback over five year but the council would need to give the okay for it as soon as possible or the loan would be withdrawn. There was approximately $2000 of fund raising from last year which there is hope of doing that again and this would make the yearly payment on the loan.  The council asked Linda to meet with her advisors and have the preliminary figures for the council to go over before giving the okay to the Angel Loan.

Justin Dahl reports the giving tree is going up with the gifts to be delivered to the Salvation Army by December 15.  Items this year will be the same as last year.  An announcement will be made in church on Sunday.

Justin explained to members about a shut-in service he was involved in previously and wondered if our church would have any members who would need this but it is felt that there is no interest in this for the present time.

Pastor Tim reminded the council once again post cards will be sent to the community inviting them to Christmas Eve services at our church.

Linda Britton reported she will be testing all the candle flashlights before the service to ensure they are working properly.  Eric will work with the Day Care Center to set up a time before the service to put up all our chairs.

Eric and Amy worked on a milestone ministry at another church that recognizes members at a milestone such as graduation.  He will bring information on this in January.

Facility Update

Eric Kaiser reports he has Scott Lyons set up to handle problems for the next month while he is out of town.

Pastor Tim reports the problems of hearing services from the fellowship hall has been fixed with a larger speaker.

Old/New Business

Eric Kaiser informed members there is a plan to hold a meeting with those who were involved with the Wild Game Feed to make preparations for next year to have a smoother night.  It is suggested to ha a separate silent auction for children and also possibly a live auction of some items.  He will inform everyone when the meeting will be held.

Tactical Plan Update

Eric Kaiser asked members for good ideas from the survey results.  The interest in better signage, Sunday School and senior housing were on the top of the list.  One item of interest is that as the church continues to grow more people will eventually be needed in a paid job to lead in some areas such as someone in charge when the church is used.  Although most churches do not have a Strategic Plan it is felt that doing this allows the church to see where there have been changes in our vision.  Having a survey every five years enables the council to see what different opinions the church members have and what new goals we should have. Within the next weeks the draft for the new plan will be done and presented to the council.  Once the council is able to discuss he pros and cons of each point the final plan will be presented to the council in January.  There are thoughts of having temple talks to explain the points but this will be decided on in January when the plan is complete.

The next meeting will be December 6 at 6:30 pm.

Following the Lord’s Prayer the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Britton
